Joseph Dashou · Wrestling coach in Gardena, California
If you are new to wrestling and want go-to takedowns that actually work, start with a strong stance, level change, penetration step, and a simple finish. I am Joseph Dashou, and below I break down beginner wrestling takedowns you can learn safely and quickly, plus the drills I use with my students in Gardena. Use this to build a solid base before you add more complex variations.
Why Simple Beats Flashy For Your First Takedowns
When you are starting out, simple always wins. Clean footwork, a tight setup, and finishing mechanics you can repeat under pressure will beat highlight-reel shots you cannot control. I coach wrestlers to master a few core takedowns, then stack details like better head position or hand fighting as we go. This helps beginners in Gardena build confidence and get mat results fast.
The Foundation: Stance, Motion, Level Change
Before any shot, your stance and movement create the opening.
Stance: Feet shoulder-width, lead foot slightly forward, knees bent, hips back, chest over thighs, hands ready to make contact. Keep a quiet upper body and active feet.
Motion: Circle, level change, and fake with intent. Do not bounce tall. Use short, efficient steps to stay in position whether you are in the room at California Mixed Martial Arts in Gardena or in a live match.
Level change: Bend at the knees, not the waist. Your eyes should lower without your head diving. Think sit to a chair, then drive forward.
Drill it: 3 sets of 60 seconds of stance and motion with two level changes every five steps. Add a sprawl call every 10 seconds to build reactive hips.
Double Leg, Step-By-Step
The double leg is the most reliable beginner takedown when you use clean angles and head position.
Setup: From a collar tie or wrist control, snap or tug to create a reaction. Circle to your lead side to open a lane.
Level change and penetration step: Drop your level, step your lead foot between the opponent's feet, knee kisses the mat lightly, trail leg follows up fast.
Head and hands: Head tight in the ribs. Hands wrap behind both knees, elbows pinched.
Drive and finish: Push off your trail leg, cut the corner, and run your feet. Avoid lifting with the back. Finish by turning the corner or driving to a shelf and covering the hips.
Common mistakes:
Diving with your head down. Fix it by cueing chest up, eyes through the target.
Reaching before your feet move. Feet first, then hands.
Stopping on the knee. Touch, then immediately bring the trail foot up to a strong base.
Solo drill: Shadow double. Mark a line on the mat and practice stepping in, knee down and up, trail foot up, then drive two steps. Do 5 sets of 10 reps.
Partner drill: Finish tree. Partner gives light resistance, you hit the double, partner hops as you run the corner. Focus on posture and foot drive for 20 seconds per rep, 6 reps.

Singles offer great control and safer entries for new wrestlers.
Setup: Inside tie and wrist, or collar tie to wrist peel. Step outside to create an angle.
Entry: Level change, step outside their lead foot, knee to the mat, head on the chest, shoulder tight. Lock your hands above the knee.
Climb and stand: Pop to your feet, keep the leg high. Your ear stays glued to their ribs.
Finish options: Run the pipe by turning your body and sitting them down, or cut across to a double if they hop.
Common mistakes:
Grabbing too low near the ankle on entry. Climb your lock above the knee.
Letting the leg drift outside your body line. Keep the trapped leg tight between your thighs.
Positional drill: Run-the-pipe rounds. Start with the leg up. Finish within 5 seconds, reset. 10 reps each side.
Snap Down To Front Headlock: Score Without Shooting
If you do not love shooting yet, the snap down is a smart path to points.
Tie up: Collar tie and inside tie.
Snap: Step back and down, pull the head and arm, drop your chest weight to the back of their head.
Front headlock: Elbow deep under the chin, other hand blocks the triceps. Put their forehead on the mat.
Go behind: Circle to the near side, block the far hip, cover the waist.
Key detail: Do not yank with just your arms. Use your hips and footwork to move their head below their hips.
Partner drill: 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off. One partner chases ties, the other scores snap to go-behind. Aim for 3-4 clean scores per round.
Ankle Pick: Low Risk, Clean Finish
The ankle pick is excellent for beginners because it blends hand fighting with simple footwork.
Control: Collar tie with your lead hand, other hand controls the wrist.
Set the angle: Circle to pull them forward.
Pick: As their weight shifts, release the wrist, reach to the near ankle, and push with the collar tie as you pull the ankle.
Cover: Drop to the side and secure the hips.
Detail to remember: Your forehead should press into the side of their head or jaw line to steer them down. Your pick hand stays palm up under the ankle, not grabbing the shin.
Drill: From hand fight, coach calls pick, you flow into the ankle pick without stopping your feet. 5 sets of 1 minute.
Defense First: Sprawl, Down Block, And Hip Pressure
Good takedowns come from being hard to take down. Build this into your baseline.
Down block: As your partner shoots, step back the lead foot and block with the same side forearm. Your head stays up.
Sprawl: Throw your legs back, hips heavy to the back of their head, hands on the shoulders. Circle to angle.
Whizzer and hip turn: If they get to your leg, overhook deep and turn your hips into them while hopping back.
Reaction drill: Coach calls shot, sprawl, or circle. Move for 90 seconds with constant cues. This is a Gardena room favorite since it builds real mat reactions without heavy impact.
What Should A Beginner Practice At Home?
You can improve footwork, motion, and finishes without a partner.
Stance and motion ladders: Use tape lines on the floor for quick step patterns, 4 sets of 45 seconds.
Shadow shots: Double and single entries with perfect posture. 50 total shots focusing on clean level change.
Wall finishes: Put a folded towel on a wall, forehead pressure in, practice running the corner for 20-second bursts.
Keep it crisp, 10-15 minutes daily. Consistency beats marathon sessions.
How We Train At California Mixed Martial Arts In Gardena
I coach private lessons at California Mixed Martial Arts in Gardena. The mats are clean and firm, which helps beginners feel stable during entries and finishes. A typical first lesson looks like this:
Goals check: Are you aiming for school season, jiu-jitsu crossover, or overall fitness and confidence on your feet?
Warm up: Light gymnastics-based movement, stance and motion, hip activation, and hand fighting patterns.
Technique block: One primary takedown, one backup option, and a simple defense reaction to each.
Positional drilling: Short rounds that lock in the finish details under pressure.
Conditioning finisher: 3-5 minute circuit specific to the day’s takedowns.
If you have access to your own gym space in the South Bay, I can travel to you. Message me to confirm details and scheduling.
How Many Beginner Wrestling Takedowns Do You Really Need?
Start with two primaries and one counter. My common starting set:
Primary A: Double leg with corner cut finish.
Primary B: Single leg with run-the-pipe finish.
Counter score: Snap down to go-behind after a defended shot.
This gives you answers from neutral whether the opponent stands tall, posts on you, or shoots first.
Common Beginner Mistakes And Fast Fixes
Standing tall: Lower your stance by bending at the knees. Film one round and compare your eye line before and after the level change.
Reaching with the arms: Move your feet first. If your arms are tired before your legs, you are reaching.
Stopping on contact: After your knee touches, bring your trail foot up and drive two steps. Momentum is your friend.
Ignoring head position: Your head is a steering wheel. Keep it tight on the ribs for doubles and glued to the chest for singles.
Forgetting to cover: After the takedown, follow the hips and secure the waist. Points do not count until you control.
Building A Beginner Week In Gardena
Here is a simple weekly plan for new wrestlers in Gardena, Hawthorne, or Torrance who want quick progress.
Day 1 at CMMA: Double leg focus. Drill entries, then 3 sets of 2-minute positional finishes.
Day 2 at home: Stance and motion, shadow shots, wall finishes. 20 minutes.
Day 3 at CMMA: Single leg focus. Hand fighting setups, run-the-pipe, and cut-across finishes.
Day 4 optional: Open mat or a private session to review, plus defense reactions and snap to go-behind.
Progress markers: You should be able to hit 25 clean shadow doubles in 2 minutes without posture breaking, and finish 7 of 10 live entries against a partner giving moderate resistance.
Safety And Conditioning For New Wrestlers
Your neck, hips, and knees do the heavy lifting in takedowns. Protect them with smart prep.
Neck: Isometrics against a wall, 3 sets of 20 seconds in each direction.
Hips: Glute bridges and lateral band walks, 3 sets of 15 reps.
Knees: Controlled lunges with a soft knee touch, 3 sets of 10 each side.
Recovery: Light bike or walk after sessions, plus mobility for the ankles and hips.
Gear checklist for first timers: Athletic clothing you can move in, wrestling shoes if you have them, and water. If you are unsure about gear, ask me before booking.
What Progress Looks Like In Your First Month
By week two, most beginners can hit entries without collapsing posture. By week three, they finish at least half of their doubles or singles in positional rounds. By week four, you should be chaining the first shot to a backup finish like single to double or double to snap go-behind. This is where confidence builds and live wrestling starts to feel fun.
Choosing The Right Lesson Package In Gardena
If you want focused help with beginner wrestling takedowns, a few sessions go a long way. My private lessons are 60 minutes and include stance and motion work, 1-2 primary takedowns, a defensive reaction, and specific conditioning. Current options:
Single lesson, pay as you go: $80 for 60 minutes. Good for a tune-up or trial.
5-lesson pack: $68 per lesson for 60 minutes each. Best for locking in two core takedowns plus defense. You save $12 per session compared to single lessons.
10-lesson pack: $64 per lesson for 60 minutes each. Best value if you want consistent coaching and a full beginner-to-confident plan. You save $16 per session compared to single lessons.
Ask me about pairing a package with a weekly home plan so you keep improving between sessions.
How Do Beginner Wrestling Takedowns Apply To Other Combat Sports?
If you compete in jiu-jitsu or MMA, the same basics still win. Doubles and singles with strong head position and angle creation let you dictate where the match goes. Hand fighting and snap downs teach you to break posture and stay safe on entries. I adjust grips, finishes, and mat awareness at California Mixed Martial Arts so your takedowns fit your rule set.
